SFIA 3: Definition

The provision of specialist expertise and practical assistance in the investigation, evaluation and interpretation of data in order to ensure its coherence, availability, accuracy and security to meet information and communication systems requirements.

Proposed for SFIA 4.0:

The investigation, evaluation, interpretation and classification of data, in order to define and clarify information structures which describe the relationships between real world entities. Such structures facilitate the development of software systems, links between systems or retrieval activities.

Data Analysis

Revised definition of Information Analysis (DTAN), from the Information Management Group
The definition and clarification of information structures such as ontologies, taxonomies and data models. These structures may be required to support the development of software systems, links between systems or retrieval activities. (Note - there seem to be many definitions of both "ontology" and "taxonomy". A plain language verison of the above would be very helpful. (MC)

Ontologies and taxonomies

Both ontologies and taxonomies can be described as 'classification systems'.

Drafting as a skill

Better: "The ability to investigate, evaluate and interpret data, in order to define and clarify information structures which describe the relationships between real world entities. Such structures facilitate the development of software systems, links between systems or retrieval activities."

However, it is generally not the data that is analysed but the world. Data about the world may well be used, of course. And, in fact, the analysis is a preliminary to the real work of DESIGN.

So the skill should be called Information Design and the definition should be: "The ability to define and clarify information structures which describe the relationships between real world entities. Such structures facilitate the development of software systems, links between systems or retrieval activities."
